About Lab

RCI is the brain-child of Dr. A.P. I Abdul Kalam, Former President of India and Founder Director of RCI. The foundation stone for RCI was laid on 3rd August 1985 by the then Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi, and was inaugurated on 27’h August 1988 by the then President of India Shri R. Venkatraman.

RCI was established on a sprawling area of 2100 acres during 1984 — 89 and now has grown as a major missile technology laboratory with lush green research campus named as “VignyanaKancha”. This Laboratory is the “Avionics Hub” for missile systems and is responsible for design, development and production of Missile Avionics. Telemetry and Tele-command and Transponder systems are also important on-board systems required to evaluate missile performance during its initial development phase. All Avionics Systems for IGMDP programme i.e., Prithvi,Akashand NAG are in production after ToT. Similarly avionics systems for Agni (A1,A2,A3 and A4) and Brahmos are also in Production.

A state-of-the-art Environmental and EMI/EMC test facilities have been established and extensively used for Qualification and Acceptance tests of the Avionics systems. All the flight hardware along with embedded mission software is validated in Hardware In Loop Simulation (HILS) along with trajectory dynamics using high fidelity flight motion simulators before flight trial. Flight Hardware and Software including Mission Software for all projects of missile systems are some of the prime contributions of RCI to Indian Missile technology.

Shri BHVS Narayana Murthy

Shri BHVS Narayana Murthy OS & Director RCI has been promoted to Distinguished Scientist (DS) w.e.f. 26th July 2018. He is an Aerospace Scientist well renowned for his R&D in Missile technologies and sustained contributions towards advancement of Aerospace industries in India. As Director, Research Centre Imarat, the Avionics laboratory founded by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, he is spearheading the development of Avionics technologies in critical areas of Navigation, Embedded Computers, Control, Guidance, Simulation, RF and Infrared Imaging Seekers, Telemetry for Indian Missiles and other defence programmes.

For last three decades he has made significant national contributions towards Design, Development and Delivery of Onboard Computers, Missile Launch Processors, Real-time Mission softwares with novel fault tolerant schemes and System on Chip for missions of national significance. Mr Murthy pioneered the development of embedded computers and other critical Avionics sub-systems which have been successfully flight tested in all the three missions of the country’s first ICBM class Agni-5 missile with range of more than 5000kms. His technological contributions have left a lasting imprint on the technology map as well as the defence preparedness of the country.

As Project Director, Mr Murthy developed the Smart Anti Airfield Weapon bolstering weapons capability of Armed forces. He led the development and production of miniaturized SatNav receivers and System on Chip (SoC) bringing in quantum jump in miniaturization of Onboard Avionics.

Mr Murthy graduated in Electronics and Communication Engineering from REC, Warangal and received his M.Tech from JNTU, Hyderabad. For his significant lifetime contributions to Aerospace engineering, Mr Murthyhas been inducted as Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is also a Fellow of IETE, Senior member IEEE, Life Member of Aeronautical Society and Computer Society of India.

For his pioneering contributions to Defence R&D, he was bestowed with Rocket and Related Technologies Award by the Astronautical Society of India. As a team leader, he received the prestigious AGNI Award for Excellence in Self Reliance. He is also a recipient of DRDO Scientist of the Year Award, Path Breaking Research/Outstanding Technology Development Award and DRDO Performance Excellence Award.
