The R&D activity involved in the development of Bioengineering and Electromedical Technologies to meet the challenging requirements of Service Combatants, is complex and involves multidisciplinary fields. This was foreseen by the then Scientific Advisor, Dr. Raja Ramanna, and Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) was formed in April 1982 by bringing together the Aero Bioengineering Unit (ABEU) located in ADE campus and the Electromedical Instrumentation Division (EMID) of LRDE located at LRDE campus. The Laboratory started functioning from its own independent premises located at the ADE campus from 17 June 1994.
The core competence of DEBEL is; (i)Design, development and evaluation of the Life Support Systems for Indian Armed Forces and (ii)Development of Biomedical instrumentation and devices. The areas of work include: (a) Aeromedical Life Support Systems, (b) Protective Equipment & Flying Clothing (c) Biomedical Engineering, (d) NBC Protection, (e) Sensors for Aeromedical & Biomedical applications and (f)Underwater Systems.
The developed Aeromedical Life Support products include; (i)Integrated Life Support System for the Air Force Combatants, (ii)Helicopter Oxygen System, (iii)Combat Free Fall Oxygen System, (iv)Light Weight Integrated Helmet, (v)Common Helmet & Mask for Aircrew, (vi)Bone Conduction Headset, (vii)Ground Troops Communication Helmet, etc. The Protective Equipment and Flying Clothing include; (i)Flame Retardant Overalls, (ii)Flame Retardant Aircrew Survival Jacket, (iii)Flame Retardant Anti G Suit, (iv)Flame Retardant Auto Inflatable Life Jacket, (v)Flame Retardant Gloves, (vi)Advanced Micro Climatic Conditioning System, (v)Cold Weather Clothing, (v)One Man HAPO Chamber, etc. The Biomedical Engineering Products include; (i)Portable Telemedicine System, (ii)Portable Handheld Vital Parameter Monitor, (iii)Wearable Physiological Health Monitoring System, etc. The NBC Protection items include; (i)NBC Respiratory Mask, (ii)NBC Single Outlet Resuscitator (Pneumatic and Electronic), (iii)NBC Multi Outlet Resuscitator, (iv)NBC Integrated Hood Mask, NBC Suit Mk-V, NBC Evacuation Bag etc. The Underwater Systems are Submarine Escape Sets from different ocean depths.
