Historical Background

Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE) originally known as Advanced Systems Integration and Evaluation Organization (ASIEO) was setup as a Project Laboratory in 1986 at Bangalore to pursue the goal of enhancing the operational capabilities of Indian Air Force through infusion of state of art Avionics Technologies. Today, DARE is the prime organization for the design and development of Radar Warners, EW suites for Combat Aircraft and Mission Avionics Systems which are essential to enhance their survivability and mission effectiveness.

DARE developed state-of-the-art Radar Warning Receivers, High accuracy direction finding pods and Airborne Jammers are used across a wide variety of Indian Air Force aircrafts. Over the years, several Radar Warners and Electronic Warfare Systems such as TEMPEST, TARANG and RWR-118have been developed and inducted successfully by the IAF. DARE has gained sufficient expertise and knowledge base through the ongoing projects for the development of EW Suites for LCA, AEW&C, MiG29 and Jaguar DARIN III. DARE has developed UV based Missile Approach Warning Systems for Cheetah and Self Protection Suite for Mi-17 helicopter. DARE has successfully completed the development and evaluation of Dual Color Missile Approach Warning System which is a Passive Missile Approach Warning System utilizing two spectral bands in the Mid Band IR.

DARE has developed Avionics Computers such as Mission Computer, Radar and Display Computers for various aircrafts including TEJAS, Jaguar DARIN-II, MiG27 and the Su-30MKI. DARE has developed a Full Authority Digital Engine Control Unit for Kaveri Engine and flight proven.DARE has also indigenously upgraded MiG27 A/C with modern digital avionics. In addition to development, DARE also conducts testing and integration of the systems into aircraft. DARE has created many infrastructure and unique test facilities such asRange on Wheels, Indoor Far Field Antenna test Facility, Highly Accelerated Life Testing and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HALT/HASS) and Mobile Multiband EW Simulator System.

DARE is currently developing Full Authority Digital Engine Control Unit for GHATAK engine, Mission Computer for Jaguar DARIN III upgrade, Display Processor-30 for SU30 MKI Enhancement programme and a new generation digital RWR DR118 for installation on any fighter, transport aircraft or helicopter.DARE has recently initiated development of new critical technologies such as New Generation Digital RWR and ESM, 5-18GHz Vivaldi antenna, 16/32 Element Linear Active Array with Transmit Receive Unit, Air Cycle Machine based Cooling System, MIPS based multi-core processing module etc. DARE is an AS9100D & ISO 9001:2015 organization.

Dr K Maheswara Reddy obtained his B.Tech from S V University, Tirupati in 1983 and M.Tech from IIT, Delhi in the year 1985

Joined DRDO, LRDE in 1985 and worked in the area of designing the optimal signal processing scheme for rejection of clutter for Airborne Radar.

Later, he joined CASSA in 1988 and worked in the area of modeling and simulation for design trade-off and performance analysis studies related to different radar, EW and missile systems.

Obtained his PhD in the field of signal processing in 1998 from IISc, Bangalore.

He joined DARE in 2003 and has been responsible for developing several variants of radar warning & missile warning receivers and Jamming systems.

The EW systems developed under his leadership are currently under production and are installed & operating on several aircraft of Indian Air Force, Navy and Army.

He has published several technical papers in national and international journals.

He received DRDO Performance excellence award for the developemnt of Tarang RWR and its variats in the year 2007.

DRDO Performance excellance award for development of R118 RWR in 2009.

DRDO scientist of the year award in 2010.

Dr K Maheswara Reddy, Distinguished Scientist, assumed charge of Director DARE on 9 oct 2015.


Products inducted into services

Technology Developed for fabrication of metal-clad and metal core multi-layered PCBs for avionics applications with the help of the local industry

Designed and developed compact, military avionics grade multi-output power supplies to deliver 100 to 200 watts of power, and packaged for mounting with wedge lock arrangements. The fabrication of the unit was done by M/s Versabyte Systems Ltd.

The Mission Planning software is a mission-critical software which decides the effectiveness of the system. Since the mission plan is the window to the system, it is essential that this software be extremely user-friendly. It is also necessary to maintain different variants of the software to cater to different aircraft platforms. So the software was designed and developed using object-oriented technology and is compliant with military standards. Associated data retrieval unit also has been developed which is a ruggedised unit that can be used at all adverse temperatures.

User-friendly automated test stations for LRU and PCB maintenance and acceptance tests, useful in production and in-service have been developed.
